EPOLUX (BEP-543) Epoxy Enamel

EPOLUX (BEP-543) is a two-component, thixotropic, chemically resistant epoxy enamel designed to provide a durable protective coating for steel and concrete surfaces.

The enamel is resistant to acids and alkalis, fresh and seawater, and detergents. It offers excellent anticorrosion properties, has a low volatile content, and allows the application of thick protective coatings.

EPOLUX (BEP-543) is used, in particular, for the internal surfaces of steel and concrete tanks intended for the storage and processing of food products, drinking water, wine and wine materials, beer, juices and other products in accordance with the applications specified in the product documentation.

The service life of the coating is at least 5 years.

Epoxy Enamel for Food Storage Tanks

EPOLUX (BEP-543) is designed to protect the internal surfaces of steel and concrete tanks used for the storage and processing of food products..

Its applications include tanks and vessels for alcohol-containing products, beer, malt, wine, drinking water, juices, soft drinks, sugar and other food products, as well as oils and fats, including vegetable oil.

The enamel can also be used for coating tanks, walls and floors in food-processing facilities.

Epoxy Enamel for Wine and Wine Materials

EPOLUX (BEP-543) is suitable for the internal protective coating of steel and concrete tanks used for wine and wine materials..

The coating protects the tank surface and can be used for long-term storage of food products in accordance with the specified applications of the enamel.

Before the coated tank is put into service, the specified curing period must be observed and the coating must undergo the sanitary treatment described below.

Other Applications

EPOLUX (BEP-543) can also be used:

  • for coating walls and floors in food-processing facilities;
  • for walls and ceilings in swimming pools;
  • for the protection of sewer systems;
  • for surfaces in contact with oils and fats;
  • for anticorrosion and chemical protection of steel and concrete surfaces.
  • for large-capacity tanks operated in contact with sugar and other food products

The operating temperature range of the coating is from −20 to +100 °C.

Thinner

For enamel, EPO-R thinner is used

Surface Preparation

Steel surface: Remove mill scale and rust by abrasive blasting to at least Grade 2 according to GOST 9.402 or Sa 2½ according to ISO 8501. Where necessary, the surface should be desalinated, dust-free and degreased.

Concrete surfaces: The surface must be cleaned and free of dust. The moisture content of the concrete must not exceed 4%. Fresh concrete should be cured at 20 °C for at least 28–30 days before coating.

Preparation of the Enamel

Before use, the material should be conditioned at 20 ± 2 °C for 24 hours.

Thoroughly mix the enamel base until homogeneous, add the hardener and continue mixing for at least 10 minutes.

The mixing ratio of the base and hardener must be determined according to the certificate supplied with the specific batch of material.

If necessary, EPO-R thinner may be added in an amount not exceeding 5%.

The application procedure also specifies an induction time after mixing of:

  • 10 minutes at +25 °C;;
  • 30 minutes at +10 °C..

The pot life of the mixed composition at 20 °C is at least 1 hour. Pot life decreases as the temperature rises and may also be shorter when the material is mixed in large quantities.

Application Procedure

Apply the enamel to the prepared surface using airless spray equipment or a brush.

During application:

  • ambient temperature: +5 to +35 °C;
  • relative humidity: 80 %;
  • substrate temperature: at least 4 °C above the dew point.

For outdoor application, the application procedure also recommends dry weather and a wind speed not exceeding 10 m/s.

The next coat should be applied after the previous coat has dried. At 20 °C, the product description specifies an interval of 24 hours.

Putting the Coating into Service

This stage is particularly important for tanks intended for contact with food products.

Before putting the coating into service, allow it to cure for:

  • 10 days at 20 °C;
  • 30 days at 15 °C.

After curing, wash the coating with cold water containing 3–5% citric acid.

Drying time may vary depending on air humidity and ventilation.

Do not force warm air over the coating until the solvent has completely evaporated, as this may cause a surface film to form and prevent solvent from escaping from the coating.

Storage

Store in an enclosed area protected from direct sunlight and moisture.

Guaranteed shelf life:

  • enamel base (Component A) — 12 months from the date of manufacture at −40 to +35 °C;
  • hardener (Component B) — 6 months from the date of manufacture at +5 to +30 °C.

Safety Precautions

The material is flammable. Do not use near open flames.

Ensure good ventilation during application and use rubber gloves and appropriate personal protective equipment.

Avoid ingestion. In case of skin contact, wash the affected area with warm water and soap.
